Convenience Stores – An Essential Part of Everyday Life in Korea
대한민국에서 편의점은 단순히 물건을 구매하는 장소가 아닙니다. 이제는 식사, 휴식, 간편한 쇼핑까지 모두 해결할 수 있는 생활 속 필수 공간으로 자리 잡았습니다. 24시간 운영되는 매장이 많아 언제든지 이용할 수 있으며, 음료, 도시락, 라면, 간식, 생활용품, 세면도구, 충전기 등 일상생활에 필요한 대부분의 상품을 한곳에서 구매할 수 있습니다.
In Korea, convenience stores are much more than places to buy snacks. They have become an essential part of daily life where people can eat, shop, and take a short break. Many stores operate 24 hours a day and offer beverages, lunch boxes, instant noodles, snacks, household goods, toiletries, chargers, and many other daily necessities.
최근에는 외국인 관광객들에게도 한국 편의점 문화가 하나의 관광 콘텐츠가 되었습니다. 한국 여행을 하면서 편의점을 방문하여 다양한 K-푸드를 경험하는 것이 하나의 즐거움으로 자리 잡고 있습니다.
Recently, Korean convenience stores have become a popular tourist attraction. Many international visitors enjoy exploring convenience stores to experience a wide variety of Korean foods during their travels.
CU 편의점에서 만난 라면 라이브러리
Discovering the Ramyun Library at CU Convenience Store
이번에 직접 방문한 CU 편의점에서는 일반 편의점에서는 쉽게 볼 수 없는 'RAMYUN Library(라면 라이브러리)' 공간이 마련되어 있었습니다.
During my recent visit to a CU Convenience Store, I discovered a unique area called the "RAMYUN Library," which is quite different from a typical convenience store.
마치 도서관에서 책을 고르듯 수십 종류의 봉지라면가 보기 좋게 진열되어 있었으며, 원하는 제품을 직접 선택하여 즉석에서 조리해 먹을 수 있도록 구성되어 있었습니다.
Just like choosing books in a library, dozens of Korean instant noodles are neatly displayed on shelves, allowing customers to select their favorite products and cook them on the spot.
첨부한 사진에서도 신라면, 짜파게티, 너구리, 안성탕면, 사리곰탕, 열라면, 진라면, 배홍동 비빔면 등 다양한 인기 제품을 한곳에서 만나볼 수 있었습니다.
As shown in the photos, popular Korean noodles such as Shin Ramyun, Chapagetti, Neoguri, Ansungtangmyun, Sari Gomtang, Yeul Ramen, Jin Ramen, and Baehongdong Bibim Noodles are all available in one place.
라면을 직접 끓여 먹는 한국의 편의점 문화
Korea's Unique Instant Noodle Cooking Culture
한국 편의점만의 가장 큰 매력 가운데 하나는 봉지라면를 직접 끓여 먹을 수 있다는 점입니다.
One of the most unique features of Korean convenience stores is the ability to cook instant noodles right inside the store.
매장에는 전용 즉석 라면 조리기가 설치되어 있으며, 고객은 원하는 라면을 선택한 후 전용 용기에 담아 기계에 올려놓기만 하면 자동으로 조리가 시작됩니다.
Special automatic noodle cooking machines are installed in the store. Simply place your selected ramen into a cooking bowl, set it on the machine, and the cooking process begins automatically.
조리 과정도 매우 간단합니다.
① 라면과 용기를 준비합니다.
② 바코드를 인식합니다.
③ 조리 시작 버튼을 누릅니다.
④ 약 4~5분 후 맛있는 라면이 완성됩니다.
The cooking process is very simple.
- Prepare your ramen and cooking bowl.
- Scan the barcode.
- Press the Start button.
- Enjoy freshly cooked ramen in about 4–5 minutes.
사진 속 조리기는 일반 라면과 볶음면을 각각 선택하여 조리할 수 있도록 되어 있었으며, 안내문도 보기 쉽게 부착되어 있어 외국인들도 쉽게 이용할 수 있도록 구성되어 있었습니다.
The cooking machine shown in the photos supports both soup noodles and stir-fried noodles. Clear instructions are provided, making it easy for international visitors to use.
즉석밥과 함께 더욱 든든한 한 끼

라면 라이브러리 옆에는 햇반과 오뚜기밥 등 다양한 즉석밥도 판매되고 있었습니다.
Next to the Ramyun Library, various ready-to-eat rice products such as Hetbahn and Ottogi Rice are also available.
한국 사람들은 매운 라면과 함께 밥을 곁들여 먹는 것을 매우 좋아합니다. 취향에 따라 김밥, 삼각김밥, 계란, 치즈 등을 함께 구입하면 더욱 든든한 한 끼가 완성됩니다.
Many Koreans enjoy eating rice together with spicy ramen. You can also add kimbap, triangle kimbap, eggs, or cheese to create a more satisfying meal.

편의점 내부에는 다양한 음료와 커피, 아이스크림, 도시락, 디저트, 간식, 생활용품까지 함께 판매되고 있어 여행 중 필요한 대부분의 물품을 한 번에 구매할 수 있습니다.
The store also offers beverages, coffee, ice cream, lunch boxes, desserts, snacks, and everyday essentials, allowing travelers to purchase almost everything they need in one location.
특히 늦은 밤 식당을 찾기 어려운 시간에도 편의점은 언제든지 따뜻한 식사를 해결할 수 있는 최고의 장소입니다.
Even late at night, when restaurants may be closed, convenience stores remain one of the best places to enjoy a warm and affordable meal.

이번에는 직접 CU 편의점을 방문하여 라면 라이브러리를 둘러보고 내부를 촬영하였습니다.

History of CU Convenience Store

CU는 대한민국을 대표하는 편의점 브랜드 중 하나입니다. 1990년 BGF리테일(BGF Retail)의 전신인 보광훼미리마트(Bogwang FamilyMart)가 일본 FamilyMart와 제휴하여 훼미리마트(FamilyMart) 브랜드로 사업을 시작했습니다.
이후 2012년 일본과의 브랜드 계약이 종료되면서 독자적인 브랜드인 CU로 새롭게 출범했습니다. 'CU'는 "Convenience for You"의 약자로, 고객에게 더욱 편리한 서비스를 제공하겠다는 의미를 담고 있습니다.

CU is one of South Korea's leading convenience store chains. Its history began in 1990, when the predecessor of BGF Retail, Bogwang FamilyMart, launched convenience stores in partnership with Japan's FamilyMart.
In 2012, after the licensing agreement with FamilyMart ended, the company introduced its own brand, CU. The name CU stands for "Convenience for You," reflecting the company's commitment to providing convenient and customer-friendly services.
Today, CU operates thousands of stores across South Korea, offering ready-to-eat meals, triangle kimbap, instant foods, coffee, desserts, daily necessities, parcel services, and financial services. In recent years, CU has also introduced unique concepts such as K-Food experiences, Ramyun Library, and regional specialty stores, helping showcase Korea's convenience store culture to visitors from around the world.
